Throughout EYFS and KS1, a systematic approach to phonics is taught, which includes the teaching of spelling.  There is a sharp focus on ensuring that children gain phonics knowledge and language comprehension necessary to read and spell, and the skills to communicate, giving them the foundations for future learning. In EYFS and Key Stage One, discrete Read Write Inc. (RWI) phonics lessons and are taught in homogenous ability groups. The RWI phonics scheme is used to teach early reading and ensure that children are able to decode efficiently – sounding and blending words quickly and accurately, leading to effective spelling.   Through direct teaching, all children participate by listening and responding, and by practising and applying what they are learning.  More information on our phonics program can be found here: Phonics

On completion of our RWI program in Year 2, children are taught to spell through ‘Spelling Shed’, continuing a strong focus on the application of phonics. Through sequential lessons that build on acquired knowledge, children are taught words of the week which are linked by a spelling pattern, sound or affix.  Lessons explore aspects such as number of syllables, tricky sounds, morphology or etymology of words, through techniques such as syllable maps, word segmentation, dotting and dashing, elkonin boxes and morphology matrices. Children also spend time revising previous words taught and independently completing activities with minimal instruction.  Challenge weeks are also included throughout the learning sequence, focusing specifically on National Curriculum word lists words and Common Exception Words. These weeks allow children to put learning into practice of words that may unfamiliar or unusual spelling patterns.  Our spelling overview can be found here:
