At Christ Church Primary School, we believe that maths is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline, essential to everyday life and providing a foundation for understanding the world around us. Through an outstanding curriculum and excellent teaching and learning opportunities, we aim to develop children who are able to reason mathematically, appreciate the beauty and power of mathematics and who display curiosity and enjoyment throughout all maths learning. Our vision states that we wish our pupils ‘have life and have it to the full’, fulfilling their potential and flourishing in every aspect of learning. We hope that the children in our school will master the mathematics curriculum and experience the fascination that studying maths can bring.
We aim to ensure that all pupils:
• become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
• reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument justification or proof using mathematical language
• can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions
In addition to the daily Maths lessons we ensure Mathematics is embedded across our curriculum so that our children have opportunities to practice their fluency, to reason and problem solve in a range of real life contexts.
