This week the children have been learning about money.

At home, ask your child to create a shop using items from around the house.

Ask your child to choose 4–6 items and give each one a price.
For example:

  • Apple – 20p

  • Toy car – 15p

  • Pencil – 10p

  • Book – 16p

Write the prices on small pieces of paper and place them next to each item.

Ask your child to choose different items to buy from the shop and talk about:

  • How much the item costs

  • Which coins they could use to pay for it

Challenge:
Ask your child to choose two items and find the total cost.
Can they work out which coins they would need to pay for both items?

Writing:

This week in writing, we have been sharing the story The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark. We will be using this story as a model to help us write the story again in our own words.

Please listen to the story together before beginning the writing activity.

The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark | A bedtime story

A classic story about Plop - a little owl who overcomes his fear of the dark. For more stories go to: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGz1GfdjqbaW-8NAhuMzjmVe90qx7Mdg_ Subscribe for more stories soon. You can buy the book here: https://www.waterstones.com/book/the-owl-who-was-afraid-of-the-dark/jill-tomlinson/paul-howard/9781405201773

Ask your child to write three sentences about what Plop saw and heard about the dark.
For example, they could write about the fireworks, the telescope, and the cat.

Your child may also enjoy drawing a picture to go with their sentences to help bring their ideas to life.

Reading:

Ask your child to read their school reading book.

  • Take turns reading pages

  • Encourage them to sound out unfamiliar words

  • Talk about the pictures and what is happening in the story.

After reading, ask questions such as:

  • Who is your favourite character? Why?

  • What happened at the beginning, middle, and end?

  • How do you think the character felt?

If your child is on the phonics programme, please click on the Phonics Star, followed by the colour band they are on, and complete the activities. These can be accessed by scanning the QR code.

If your child is in Mrs Stanley’s Reading group then have a go at the ‘How to Build a Snowman’ comprehension below.  You can read the text and then either talk through the answers with an adult or jot down your answers onto some paper.

DT:

In DT, we are going to be designing and creating a moving monster. Look at the examples below and try to imagine what your own monster would look like.

Your task is to create two designs of a monster's head. You might want to experiment with different features before deciding which design you prefer.

Your design might include:

  • Fangs
  • Wings
  • Scales
  • Spikes
  • Large eyes
  • Horns
  • Fins

Can you think of any other features?
