What is an eco school?

We are an eco-school and we participate in the international Eco-Schools program.  This provides a framework for embedding sustainability into our school's curriculum and daily life. Led by some of our dedicated children, the program guides school to improve their environmental performance through projects focused on topics like waste reduction, energy saving, and biodiversity.  We have earnt our Green Flag Award for actions we have taken.

How to become a member of our eco-committee

Aspiring young leaders throughout school, from Years 4 to 6 have the opportunity to apply for a role within the school’s Eco Committee. Members of the Eco Committee show fantastic and clever ideas which place them in control of environmental actions and projects within our school and local community. Our Eco Committee learn that they can make a difference to the world we live in and help lead the school towards these steps.

As part of the application process, children were asked why they wanted to be on the committee. Here are some of their responses:

"I love the environment and want to make a difference for my generation and save the planet from pollution. It would mean alot to me to create a better world."

"Sometimes when I walk to school I see rubbish and it makes me upset.  Also people polluting the ocean causes turtles to die which makes me feel devastated.  I love nature and helping the wildlife."

"I like to care for the world and would like to make our school more eco-friendly. I want to look after the animals and the planet since the plastic pollution is hurting them."

Project Litter Picking

Our eco-committee promote litter picking throughout school to keep the school environment clean.  We teach our children about responsibility and caring for their surroundings. Litter pickers are available to each year group and children are able to litter pick during their break and lunchtimes.  Litter picking also features in our curriculum when we are learning about sustainability and how to look after our environment.

Project Pollination

The Eco Committee created planting areas around the school using recycled tyres. These areas have been filled with wildflowers and sunflowers to attract wildlife and support pollinators such as bees and butterflies. This initiative not only enhances the school environment but also promotes biodiversity and helps increase pollination, contributing to a healthier ecosystem.

Project WOW - Walk To School Challenge

WOW is a year-round initiative that encourages children to walk, cycle, or scoot to school instead of traveling by car. It’s designed to promote healthy lifestyles, reduce traffic congestion, and protect the environment by cutting down on pollution.

Each day children from Year 1 to 6 record how they travel to school. Those who walk, scoot, or cycle earn badges and rewards for their efforts. The program makes walking fun and helps children develop independence while learning about sustainability.

Our eco-committee play an important role promoting this initiative, monitoring travel across school and organising the delivery of badges to children that have earnt them.
