Our Vision for Art and Design

At Christ Church Primary School, we have a vibrant and inclusive art and design curriculum that nurtures creativity, innovation and critical thinking. Our aim is to inspire children to explore their artistic potential and develop a deep appreciation for the visual arts.  Through our diverse curriculum, hands-on experiences and engaging projects, we aim to cultivate a community of passionate and skilled artists and designers who are prepared to make meaningful contributions to the world.

Our Art and Design Curriculum

Pupils are inspired and challenged to invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. All have ample opportunity to produce creative work, explore their ideas and become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.  Children learn how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to British culture, creativity and wealth.

We have a progressive, well sequenced art and design curriculum throughout school, that has been carefully designed to enable children to develop secure, deep and fluent knowledge and skills. Our curriculum follows the National Curriculum Programme for Art and Design and develops:

  • Drawing and painting
  • Sculpture
  • Printing
  • Collage

Key Information

  • Art is taught weekly, every other half term, in years 1 to 6, allowing a total of three project to be completed annually.
  • Our art and design is recognised by our ‘Arts Mark' achievement.
  • We take inspiration from ‘Access Art’ to plan and deliver our art lessons.
  • Children have A3 sketchbooks that show their artistic journey throughout school.
  • Children have the opportunity to attend after-school art and design activities to further develop art and design skills and knowledge.
  • We have a wide variety of materials and tools available to use throughout school.
  • We encourage the use of art throughout other foundation subjects, for example looking at images for discussion in R.E. and history and using art to express feelings in RHE.
  • Seasonal art lessons are included in our curriculum, for example throughout the Christmas period.

Developing Literacy through Art and Design

We develop literacy through all areas of our curriculum, including art and design, in the following ways:

  • Using an increasingly broad vocabulary in art lessons to extend children's language.
  • Encouraging high quality oracy for example, through discussion regarding interpretation of artists’ work.
  • Through reading research materials, taking notes where necessary.
  • Annotating the work of artists.
